56% of Broome County, NY is considered timberland with 92% of it being owned by private individuals. Programming through the local New York Forest Owner's Association (NYFOA) chapter aids in the education of forest owners, in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County. On-farm composting and other hazardous waste issues are a growing concern and addressed in this section. Projects through the Broome County Soil & Water Conservation District and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation District work on agricultural environmental issues.
